It seems that Amsterdam has it all – culture, history, beauty, and freedom. The Netherlands’ capital hardly ever runs out of fun activities for its visitors. If you’re planning to have a holiday in Amsterdam, here are a couple of things that you can do in your stay.  1. Explore the history: 

Go to museums before you explore anywhere else. Get to know Amsterdam through its history and see how it grew through the ages. You should go to Old Town to fully experience the heart of Amsterdam. Besides, this is the central bulk of tourism in Amsterdam, so it’s natural that you should go there.The Amsterdam Museum provides you with everything you need to know about the history of the city. There are guided tours in the museum and signing up for one would make it easier for you to explore the place. The tours have different themes and there’s even one that is exclusive for children. There is also an audio tour for those you wish to fly solo. You should also visit the Anne Frank Museum, the very house of which Anne Frank and her family stayed in hiding for two years during World War II.

2. See some art Amsterdam:

It has an amazing collection of art pieces, both old and contemporary. Head to the Museum Quarter and you can find three famous museums: the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art, Van Gogh Museum, and Rijks museum. If you’re looking forward to see something modern, go to Stedelijk and Van Gogh. The former displays works of famous modern artists like Picasso and Matisse. The latter, of course, houses Van Gogh’s art pieces although the other works of artists, who are influenced by Gogh, are being displayed there as well.

3. Sightseeing in Jordaan: 

Jordaan is this place in Amsterdam where you can just walk around and admire the view. Your surroundings would be old but beautiful buildings, canals, little bridges, trees and narrow alleyways. It’s like a postcard. There are cafes in the area and galleries, too. You could say that Jordaan is a hub for artists because many of them live in the area. You could also say that Jordaan is an upper class neighbourhood because it is known to be one of Amsterdam’s most pricey residential areas.4. Relax at parks, dine well and drink well Vondelpark is Amsterdam’s most famous parks. After spending a day at the Museum Quarter, you can immediately walk to Vondelpark. There are other parks in Amsterdam as well and you can spend some time there, skating and cycling.Restaurants, cafe and pubs are all over the city and finding one is not a problem. Some are quite expensive – posh, fine dining places. But if you explore Amsterdam really well, there are some affordable places, too.5. Go to the Red Light DistrictThis is one of the reasons why Amsterdam is a place of freedom. The Red Light District has a notorious reputation for open and legal prostitution, which could be shocking and amusing at the same time. Some “coffee shops” in the district are known to be selling marijuana, joints and space cakes. One night of harmless fun, okay maybe a weekend, could be one of the most exhilarating and memorable moments of your life. It’s a matter of perception really – the Red Light District is a fun place but if you don’t find it so, then you stay away. After a lot of travel around the world, I’ve come to see that there is a pattern between how much accommodation costs and what you’ll likely spend in the place you’re visiting. 1) Multiply your Accommodation Costs by Three A good way to figure out how much a place is going to cost you is to multiply the accommodation costs by three. The main costs associated with travel are: accommodation, transport, food and entertainment. If you’re staying a hostel that’s $20 per night, you can expect that it’ll cost you another $40 per day, on average, to be entertained and fed ON A BUDGET. If you stay in a mid-range hotel that’s around $100 per night, then you can expect to spend around $200 on entertainment and transport per day to maintain that same kind of standard of travel (eating out in restaurants, and so forth). Obviously this is not a hard and fast rule, but is a handy estimation that you can use when you are looking for accommodation online and trying to get an idea of costs

.2) Get In Touch With Someone Who Knows Do you have a friend who’s recently been where you are heading? Ask them how they found costs to be and how much they think they spent in certain places. If you don’t know anyone who’s ever been there before, why not get in touch with a local on a site such as Couch surfing and ask them for an indication of what stuff costs. 3) Make a Budget, Stick to It, Once you’ve got a budget, stick to it. You have to be firm, especially if you’re traveling for a long time. There will be parts of your travel budget you can save on, and things you can’t. For instance, transportation costs tend to be set, although you can take cheaper alternatives such as the bus instead of the train. I find it helpful to only eat one for one meal of the day and to swap it around a bit. Lunch is easily fixed with a sandwich to take away from somewhere. Keeping food costs down is one of the best ways to extend your travels or to simply allow more cushion for other spending.Planning a travel budget can be one of the most challenge parts of travel, but it is important. If you’re traveling for a long time you can look into picking up odd jobs here and there to facilitate your travels long after your savings have run dry.

How to be Prepared for Anything When Wandering a Foreign City“Be prepared!”  It’s every scout’s motto for a reason.  Of course you know the obvious things to carry when travelling- cash, ID, your camera – but there’s a few handy tools you’ll want around when wandering foreign streets that you may not have thought of.  Earn your adventurer’s preparedness badge by collecting the following kit for your next expedition.

(1) Pen and paper- Write it all down – new foreign phrases, addresses, directions, things to Google later, little bolts of inspiration – you’re going to want to collect it all, and a teeny notebook and a reliable pen or two will be your new best friend when you’re on the road.  Plus, you’re going to make new friends along the way.  Collect names, phone numbers, e-mail address – and rip out pages to give out your own.

(2) First-aid – Band-aids, band-aids, band-aids.  Blisters happen.  Band-aids keep you walking.  You know what else happens?  Headaches, mosquitoes, motion sickness, and all sorts of other mishaps.  Being prepared means never having to slow down- so pack a small first aid kit and keep adventuring on!

(3) Hand sanitizer – This is especially important if you’re travelling in a country where eating with your hands is part of the cultural experience and access to soap might be a little touch and go.  Dab a little on, rub it in and enjoy your meals as the locals do – without fear of germs ruining the experience.

(4) Toilet paper (or tissues) – Usually in the same countries where hand sanitizer is most imperative, toilet paper is also not the norm.  Indulge your first-world self by carrying your own.  It’s not just for the bathroom either.  You’ll find it handy for blowing your nose, cleaning up spills, wiping off questionable substances you may trek through, and any number of unexpected hijinks along the way.Image Credit: sónia sapinho

(5) Snacks and water-   It’s important to point out that carrying snacks is not about avoiding local cuisine.  In fact, you should collect your nibbles on location whenever possible.  Having something to nosh on handy is more about those times the bus breaks down for four hours or you look around and every restaurant looks less like an exotic experience and more like an adventure in food poisoning.  As for water- hydration is just important.  Drink up!

(6) Scarf- A scarf makes you a little more prepared for all weather.  Whether you rap your throat on a chilly morning or wrap your head in the rain, a scarf will help you handle the elements whatever the weather. (If there’s space, an umbrella can also be handy in particularly rainy climes.)  Ladies will also find it useful for staying culturally appropriate – pull it out of your bag, cover your head or shoulders, and bam! – you’re the most conscientious of travellers.

(7) Friend-making Tools- A couple pictures of your family, friends, hometown, cats, dogs, or whatever else is important to you are a great way to forge instant connections.  Even if you don’t speak the same language, some things are understood – love, family and home are the universal truths we all have in common. Candies or a roll of small currency are nice to have around for sealing your friendships amongst the smaller set.  Just make sure you’re not randomly approaching children in a culture where that might be a little suspicious.  Whether your new companion is eight or eighty, pull out your pen and paper and write down some contact info when its time to leave – you’ll amass an international family before you even know it.

2) Get into Facebook If you’re not already on Facebook, maybe you’d like to consider joining? It’s a great way to keep in touch with a lot of people at once. You can post something on Facebook and all of your friends can look at the photo, read what you’ve written and comment back to you. It’s the easiest way to keep everyone in the loop. The great thing about Facebook is that it’s two-way, so not only can you post what you’re up to you can also see what friends and family are up to back home.3) Don’t Underestimate a Letter There’s something special about receiving a handwritten letter or postcard from someone. If you’re at all at risk, make sure you wear compression stockings, and keep getting up for a wander around the cabin. Even circling your ankles and moving your toes and legs will help.Adjust as soon as you arrive Your body clock isn’t going to know whether it’s coming or going once you arrive in a totally different time zone, so it’s important to try and adjust as quickly as possible, to minimize the effects and help you get into the swing of things much quicker. Basically if it’s night time when you arrive, go to bed as you normally would, and if its lunchtime when you arrive, eat lunch. It will feel odd at first, but the quicker you reset your body clock, the quicker you will feel normal again. Jet-lag seems to be our universal pay off for having the freedom to visit amazing far-flung destinations. Follow this advice and you should arrive feeling slightly more human, and you should be able to kick off the effects much quicker.

City breaks can be just as much fun as beach breaks, and can provide a perfect in-between kind of holiday. When the weather isn’t great and it’s not quite right for lying on a beach, a few days roaming around a city, exploring everything a new destination has to offer, is the perfect way to spend your time. Shopping, culture, architecture, sport, night-life – cities have it all, and we’re lucky to be close to some fantastic cities, right on our doorstep.The added bonus is that short haul flights to nearby cities can be just as cheap as a bus or train journey to a city in the UK, so take advantage of that fact and explore somewhere new! You can cut travel costs even further by driving yourself to the airport and booking your parking spot through Park BCP. I do this regularly and always save considerably on the cost of public transport, especially when there is more than one of us travelling. Check this idea out for yourself, as it is a nationwide service, so nobody misses out. Lisbon is a seriously cosmopolitan city to visit, as well as Madrid and Berlin, and the beautiful city of Rome.You can’t expect to see everything a city has to offer during one visit, but you can get a good overview. If your particular city destination has a hop on/off tourist bus, I’d definitely recommend a ride, as this will give you an overview of the city, so you know which bits you’d like to head back over to. Of course, researching before you go will also give you a head’s up.The city is calling!

Holidays are not just reserved for summer, in fact there is much to be said for a winter break!Getting away from your usual surroundings in the middle of a bleak, cold winter can be just the tonic for raising those spirits, and whilst summer may seem a million miles away, there are destinations where it is summer (well, to us anyway) practically all year around!Image Credit: stashabella. Whether you fly direct or indirect, depending on the destination, you will be able to open up your search much wider if you are flexible on date and where you fly from. If you are flying from a different airport, with a slightly longer journey to the airport, then consider booking a night at a hotel, either nearby or on site, to cut down on tiredness. I regularly stay at the hotels at Stansted Airport, especially so during winter, and I can’t fault them on price and customer service. I would definitely recommend this idea, and it won’t break the bank either.Something that could break the bank is a medical nightmare and if it’s the slopes you’re visiting this winter then you should definitely sort yourself some insurance. You can get specialist winter sports cover with most companies – I've found holiday insurance from holidayextras.co.uk to be fair value, so go check them out.As the weather can be somewhat unpredictable during the winter months, it’s simply a case of keeping up to date on live flight information, and I always check my airport and flight for the few days before my flight. When you’re choosing your winter break, you only really have to whittle it down to three categories – city break, ski/log cabin break, or winter sunshine. Cities offer a world of entertainment and sightseeing options, and you can always get cheap flights to many nearby European cities, so that could be a good choice for a shorter holiday. As for skiing or log cabin holidays, think cosying up in front of a roaring fire, with a cup of steaming cocoa – bliss! To get the most out of this type of break will need at least a week in my opinion, especially if you’re planning on getting active on those ski slopes! And finally winter sun – my favorite option of them all! The beach is practically my second home, and destinations as close as the Canary Islands mean winter sun in abundance. Of course, if you want to head further afield, then consider Goa, Kenya, the Caribbean even – you won’t struggle to find a destination.You don’t have to wait until the summer holidays begin before jetting off somewhere exotic and new, in fact I like winter holidays for the fact that it’s totally out of the ordinary, and really something to look forward to.Break the winter blues – embrace the winter holiday.
